The mission of our society are to carry out investigation and research concerning nephrology and other related fields, to propagate knowledge to public in Japan, to advance academic achievements in nephrology, and to give back profits to our communities as shown below:

(5) Communication and cooperation with other related organizations in Japan and other countries

Human kidneys are located at both sides of the back. Their shapes resemble Fava beans and their sizes are slightly larger than the fists.
The role of kidneys is to keep the blood clean by excreting waste materials into the urine. It also plays a role in maintaining body fluid volume and pH (acidity or alkaline) of the blood. Kidneys secrete a hematopoietic hormone and improve anemia. They are also involved in metabolism of calcium and phosphorus.
The main fields of nephrology are to investigate the structure and function of the kidney, to search the causes of symptoms (such as proteinuria, hematuria or edema) and renal function deterioration observed in clinical practice (by renal biopsy), to actively treat kidney disorders, and to provide renal replacement therapy for patients who unfortunately developed end-stage renal disease (by hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis or renal transplantation).

(1) A medical doctor having a history of membership in JSN for 5 years or longer.
(2) Being Board Certified Member of JSN of Internal Medicine for 3 years or longer, if one was given specialty training in internal medicine.
(3) Being Certified Board Pediatrician of The Japan Pediatric Society for a year or longer, if one was given specialty training in pediatric medicine.
(4) Being Board Certified Surgeon of Japan Surgical Society for a year or longer, if one was given specialty training in surgical medicine.
(5) Being Japanese Board Certified Urologist of The Japanese Urological Association for a year or longer, if one was given specialty training in urological medicine. (6) A training history of 3 years or longer at postgraduate education institutes based upon specified curriculum.
Doctors fulfilling all of (1), (6) and one of (2-5) are eligible for taking an exam. Judgment of acceptance is carried out by comprehensive evaluation of summary of experienced cases, curriculum vitae and results of certification examination test. That is, Board Certified Nephrologist indicates a member of JSN, who can perform renal biopsy and prescribe oral and injection drugs and has a broad knowledge and experience in dialysis (hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis) and renal transplantation. The number of Board Certified Nephrologists is 4,111 on June 18, 2014.
